Golf

Why you’ll love golf

Mark Twain may have (allegedly) said that golf was ‘a good walk spoiled’, but what did he know? The love of golf is something all devotees of the sport understand—which is why they also love coming to Tasmania to tee off.

Stop off along the Great Eastern Drive to visit golf courses at St Helens, Scamander, St Marys, Fingal, Bicheno, Coles Bay, Swansea and Orford. Drive scenic and challenging fairways, chip your way onto some amazing greens, putt a few winners and then continue to explore the east coast on one of Australia’s greatest road trips.

Where you’ll find it

St Helens

The St Helens Golf Club is an 18-tee course (par 71), with a clubhouse and fully stocked bar, set in picturesque bushland on the boundary of the town.

Malahide

Fingal is home to one of the best 9 hole courses in Australia. Picturesque and beautifully maintained.

The Scamander River Golf Club, at the Scamander Sports Complex, has a well-maintained par 72, nine-hole course. Course length is 5778 metres with a feature par five of 569 metres. The clubrooms offer bar service and meals each Friday evening.

St Marys

The unique St Marys Golf Club is a flat, easy to walk, nine-hole, 18-tee course. The club also includes a horse track, football and cricket oval and a lawn bowls green.

Bicheno

The Bicheno Golf Club, located five kilometres north of Bicheno, is a fully irrigated nine-hole course, open seven days a week (clubhouse open Wednesday, Friday and Saturday).

Freycinet

The Freycinet Golf Club, near Coles Bay, features tight driving holes, man-made lakes and river and coastal views. Competition days are Wednesday and Saturday.

Swansea

The waterfront Swansea Golf Club has gorgeous views across Great Oyster Bay and offers refreshments in the clubhouse on Saturday and Wednesday afternoons.

Orford

The picturesque Orford Golf Club has gently undulating fairways, well-groomed greens, and views of Maria Island from many fairways. Competitions are on Saturdays for men and Thursdays for ladies. A nine-hole Chicken Run competition is held every Friday.
